Bad (Password) Habits Are Hard to Break
Nearly everyone has bad habits when it comes to their digital passwords. And it’s no wonder: people, on average, juggle 100 passwords day in and day out, logging into the many digital systems we’re all tied to in these modern times.
Sure, we know we’re supposed to use a mix of numbers, letters and symbols peppered with upper and lowercase letters. But it’s just easier to reuse the same password across multiple accounts even though we know that’s risky. In fact, according to the latest statistics, 61% of us do just that — and we cross-pollinate our personal passwords into our work accounts. Given that 44% of employees claim to re-use passwords across systems, think about how often that risk is pulled over into the corporate space each day.
Fortunately, businesses can bypass these common bad habits from employees. The authentication method multi-factor authentication, or MFA, not only tightens up digital perimeters, but it also makes for a more seamless and satisfying sign-on experience for everyone involved.
What Is MFA and Why Is It Critical Today?
The newest infographic from HID explains how multi-factor authentication moves the mark when it comes to reducing the risk of data and software breaches. MFA works by granting you access to a website, system or database only after you present two or more pieces of evidence to verify you are who you say you are.
For example, you might be prompted to provide a username and/or password — and then to further prove your identity — you might be asked to enter a one-time code that’s texted to your phone or sent to the email address on file. Done right, MFA balances protection, encryption and ease-of-use while ensuring the sign-on experience is efficient and simple for all.
Advantages include:
- Enhanced security
- Stronger authentication
- Reduced operational costs
- Better user experience
- Increased productivity
